Patagonia started with humble beginnings when reknowned climber and mountaineer Yvon Choinard began making climbing equipment at his foundry, the Great Pacific Iron Works, in Ventura California. When his climbing gear became, in his view, destructive to the very mountains that he revered, Chouinard made one of the first of his difficult but beneficial choices. He decided to stop making the pitons and more intrusive climbing tools that were seventy percent of his livelihood for the fundamental reason that it seemed wrong to him.
Fortunately for him and his fledgling company, he had also begun to import handsome and tough rugby shirts and he turned his attention to this new portion of his business, and Patagonia was born.
Chouinard is still running the show at Patagonia, and as one of the worlds most passionate anglers, he is especially dedicated to all aspects of Patagonia's Fly Fishing program. From the legendary SST jackets, Guidewater Waders, Stormfront Packs, all the way to the essential Capilene and Socks, there is nothing that gets past his legendary eye.
One of the greatest features about Patagonia is the double-faceted nature of their Ironclad guarantee. On the surface, the guarantee is legendary for being the true state of the art in customer service and standing behind their excellent products. Another portion of the guarantee pertains to the company itself. When you choose to invest in Patagonia, you are guaranteed that your dollars go to a company that always strives to do the right thing. When it comes to being the most proactive environmentally, and resource oriented company, Patagonia has no peers. The rest of the steadily greening world is now beginning to get to a place where it can now better appreciate what Patagonia has for over thirty years now always stood for.
