Nautilus began in the early nineties as Old Florida Fly Reels. These groundbreaking reels are still revered for their capabilities and toughness in the face of punishing saltwater environs: tough fish and exacting guides.

In 2000, as Kristen and Andreas Mustad, the engineers and designers looked at large arbor successors for the Old Florida series of reels, they hit upon the idea of using one of the strongest configurations offered in the natural world. Evolved over millions of years the Nautilus shell was the enlightened choice, offering an incomparable blend of strength and light weight.

As they began to design these reels, other features integrated into the new large arbor technology such as a sealed disc drag and clutch mechanism, ultra lightweight machining and bearing technology, and interchangeable variable diameter spools. Soon, freshwater sizes benefitting from this marine caliber construction philosophy were developed. By the time the reels were nearing completion, it was decided that the reel was much more than a successor, it was an entirely new animal, and a new division of the company was added to make room for the high tech new offering.

Now, Nautilus offers three series of fly reels from zero to sixteen weights that are every bit as tough as they are technologically advanced.
